Economy
Like the rest of Nagaland, the population of Niuland largely remains rural with dependence on agriculture for their source of income. Blessed with ample land and plain area, the farmers grow cereals like maize, paddy and wheat as well as oilseeds. In addition, cash and plantation crops such as jute, arecanut and rubber tree are grown and its product raw material for further processing. The District also has favourable conditions for horticulture crops. Due to its strategic location and the advantage of sharing inter-state and inter-district border, the district has a huge potential for promoting commercial activities. Weaving, basketry and Carpentry are traditionally activities in which a sizeable number of the local people are skilled. Apart from this, poultry, piggery and cattle breeding are also practiced albeit through traditional methods.
AGRICULTURE
Rice is a staple food which is cultivated in about 70% of the net cultivated area. The types of farming system practiced in the district are:
- Traditional Jhum cultivation
- Terrace Rice cultivation
- Wet Rice Cultivation.
- Rice Area covered – 125 Ha
- Maize Area covered – 140 Ha (Hezulho , Hovukhu , Kiyezu (B) Village)
- Jute Area covered – 30 Ha(Ghoshito ,Kiyezu A & B, Kikheyi ,Hozheto Village)
- Pulse Area Covered – 45 Ha (Hezulho , Hovukhu, Ghoshito , Kiyezu village)
- Oil Palm Area Covered – 79 Ha (Kuhoxu , Hovishe, Zuheshe Village)
- Soyabean area covered – 28 Ha Kuhoxu village
- Ginger area covered – 22 Ha Hovishe village
HORTICULTURE
The district has been gifted with a unique topography and varied agro – climatic and soil conditions, which offers opportunities to cultivate a variety of horticultural crops like vegetables and fruits. Among vegetables beans, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, etc are being cultivated and fruits like pineapple, guava, lemon and mango are the major ones covering the area in the district. The commercial crop among the floriculture is Anthurium and Euphorbia
FORESTRY
About 2750 Hectares of the district has been covered under FDA plantation which consists of Teak, Hollock , Khokon and Bamboos. Non Timber Forest products (NTFPs) available in the district are:
- Bamboos and canes
- Stone boulders and chips
- Sand
- Dalchini, broom stick (Jharu) grass and firewood
INDUSTRY
Weaving, basketry and Carpentry are traditionally activities in which a sizeable number of the local people are skilled. The Industry department has also implemented various schemes to facilitate rapid and sustained industrial development in the district such as:
- MSME (Micro, small & Medium Enterprises)
- Central Incentive- Freight Subsidy scheme & Capital subsidy
- Man power Subsidy & Power subsidy.
- Handloom Schemes, ICICI Lombard Health Insurance scheme.

The Bio- Diversity of Climatic and Soil conditions is also suitable for Commercial exploitation of varieties of Silkworms – Mulberry, Eri and Muga Block wise area under cultivation in silkworm food plants and productivity of silk
